Multi-Colored Blankets

Sometimes yarn comes in multi-colored skeins. For example, I've knit this blanket, "Pink Parade", which is a skein in variegated pink, lavender, and white yarn. (These kinds of multi-colored blankets, where the skeins are variegated, are charged at the "single color" price.)

Although it's not my personal favorite (the heather blue is.... for now), a lot of people have ordered this one, and it's a popular choice. Recently I've seen variegated skeins of other colors, so I will buy and experiment with them.

Also recently, I've begun experimenting with multiple colors knit together in one blanket. Yellow with very fine pink, the blanket is a little on the peachy side but it's quite subtle. When I finish, I will post photos. After that one, I think I'll see what green with very fine lavender looks like.... you never know, it could turn out to be awesome!

The very first special request I got was in 1995, for my nephew's blanket. It was a pattern of stars... in red, white, and blue! Very patriotic!

I've made one-of-a-kind multi-colored blankets since then, but this next blanket was a special request of a different kind. My friend chose the main color (pink) and allowed me to choose the other colors, and any design using them. It's striped because that is easiest, which was important because it was my first try at making an adult-sized blanket. It was, I admitted and my friend knew, an experiment. The amount of yarn, the size of needles, size of blanket... it turned out to be a bit thinner and lighter than either of us had expected, but she loves it all the same. Good friend! But now I know, and the next time I'll make a few adjustments.

The next multi-colored blanket I made was also an experiment, and one that I think turned out great! A friend's grandbaby was expected, and although we knew it was going to be a girl, "Grandma" wanted to see what color "Mom" was going to paint the nursery before ordering a blanket. Turns out, it was going to be a polka dot nursery ~ so I knit a polka dot blanket!

It was time-consuming, took several trial runs or false starts, but finally it was coming along well and I liked how it was shaping up. Here are some photos of that blanket.
